Immune cells like T cells, NK cells, and macrophages have the potential to eliminate cancer cells, but their cytotoxic functions require adequate activation, which is often hindered by the tumour microenvironment. Novel cancer immunotherapies aim to understand the mechanisms leading to sub-optimal immune cell activation in cancer patients and develop strategies to overcome them.
