The Role

The Team Leader in the Method Development / Validation Section leads a team of scientists performing feasibility studies, analytical testing, method development and validation using a range of Chromatography techniques such as LC/MS, LC/MS-MS, GC/MS and Ion chromatography. This involves analysis of a range of test samples (substances, compounds, formulations, investigational or commercial products, raw materials) submitted by clients from the Life Sciences, chemical and related industries. The ideal candidate will have experience of leading analytical projects in a commercial setting and will have supervised junior colleagues previously. The Bradford site operates to current Good Manufacturing Practice and regulatory Good Laboratory Practice.

The Team Leader will have scientific / technical skills commensurate with those of an experienced analytical scientist. In their new role they will take on responsibilities in line management and work scheduling, and in directing the work of their staff, ensuring effective organisation of resources and time. They will work closely with their Section Manager to ensure operational targets are met.

Main Duties to:

  • Receiving analytical requests, and carrying out (or guiding their team in carrying out) revenue generating laboratory-based analytical project work, applying diverse chromatography and analytical techniques to a wide range of sample types.
  • Associated data processing, data interpretation and report writing; peer review of data / reports generated by team members.
  • Supervising team members carrying out method development and validation, including drafting of related documents (methods, protocols, reports).
  • Line managing an internal team; selecting appropriate team members for the completion of analytical tasks; ensuring the quality of team outputs.
  • Working with their Section Manager to maintain a diverse team of staff with complementary skills and competencies, ensuring high levels of performance, development and motivation.
  • Where relevant, providing technical guidance and training to team members or other colleagues; overseeing the training of new members of staff.
  • Ensure all equipment is maintained and upkeep is managed by the appropriate staff.
  • Principle techniques dependent on experience and training.
  • Client liaison, inter-group liaison, internal projects and initiatives.
  • Contributing to and adhering to company standard operating procedures.
  • Training of co-workers in own specialist techniques.

Qualifications/Role Requirements:

  • BSc or PhD in an analytical, chemical or related scientific field with demonstrated, relevant experience.
  • Broad practical experience in developing, validating and applying analytical methods; analytical research skills.
  • Experience of leading a team of junior scientists or previous people management experience
  • Experienced in the use of complex analytical instrumentation.
  • Experience of working in a regulated environment (quality, health and safety).
  • Familiarity with good scientific practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, think and work independently, problem-solve, work in teams and multitask.
  • Able to identify and highlight own training needs, and proactively upskill.
  • Equipment maintenance and trouble-shooting skills.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills; IT Literate.
  • Proactive approach to your work.

Working Hours

Full time (37.5hrs per week)
