Concept Life Sciences is a knowledge-based, science-led business providing a wide range of innovative and integrated solutions to clients in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food, environmental, agrochemical, petrochemical, chemical and consumer products sectors. We also work closely with academic groups.
Formed in 2014, our business has expanded through a mix of organic growth and targeted acquisition. Today, we are home to more than 700 employees, working from ten sites across the UK, sharing a common focus on problem solving, quality, collaboration, communication and flexibility.
By bringing together teams of highly trained scientists, excellent laboratory facilities and an in-depth understanding of our core markets, we have created a business that is greater than the sum of its parts. This synergy means we have the in-house resources to offer a range of integrated services to our clients.
Our operations are structured around two divisions. Our Integrated Discovery and Development Services division supports discovery and development in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, agrochemical, chemical and consumer industries. Our Analytical Services division provides an extensive range of integrated services to clients in the life sciences, food, industrial and environmental sectors.

Chief Commercial Officer
Philip is guiding Concept Life Sciences to its next stage of growth by taking responsibility for driving the company’s commercial strategy. As well as managing the sales team, he is identifying new service areas, geographies and markets that will expand the company’s reach into Europe and the US.
Philip has 27 years’ experience in managing the integration of business development in an international environment. Having worked in pharma and biotech discovery as well as analytical and development services, he has invaluable cross-sector expertise. Philip joined from Aptuit, where he was Vice President of Sales.
Philip has a BSC in Chemistry. He has also studied business and leadership at London Business School and most recently Columbia University in New York.
Chief Operating Officer
John has group-wide responsibility for management of all operational sites with a focus on working effectiveness and efficiency both internally and externally. The delivery of operational excellence is key to providing a quality service as well as working closely with the business development team to create new opportunities for growth and identify new areas of scientific expertise to develop along with the CSO. He also oversees the group Quality Assurance department to ensure full regulatory compliance.
John has over 30 years’ experience of working within the contract research industry. Before joining Concept Life Sciences, he was with Envigo, where he progressed to President EMEA Operations.
John is a member of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. He participates in UK shadow OECD discussion panels for ecotoxicology and biodegradation as well as being a member of the NC3Rs working group on ecotoxicology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology.
Chief Scientific Officer
Dr Paul Doyle
From 1981 to 1996, Paul held a variety of senior positions in research for the Wellcome Foundation at Beckenham in Kent, culminating in Senior Research Scientist for the Drug Discovery Unit.
Paul was most recently Technical Director at BioFocus (now BioFocus DPI, a Galapagos company) where between 1997 and 2003, he was a founding scientist and Director of Chemistry. Paul holds a degree in chemistry from New College, Oxford and achieved his D. Phil. at the University of Sussex in 1981. He has previously been Secretary to the UK Peptide and Protein Group and was one of the instigators of the BioMolecular Structure Unit at the University of Sussex.
VP BD Pharmaceutical Development & Preclinical
Simon has a proven track record in delivering specialist analytical services to support early stage drug development programmes.
His focus is not only on introducing new technologies and managing our laboratory work flows within a quality compliant environment but also forging long lasting relationships with clients and suppliers. During an impressive and distinguished career, Simon has overseen a wide range of specialist analytical activities covering both research and development and GMP manufacturing. He has worked on numerous publications.
Head Of Program Management
Helen is an experienced project leader with a strong track record of successful preclinical and early clinical project management within the pharmaceutical and CRO industry. As Head of Program Management she is reviewing the Group’s approach to program management to ensure a consistent process is in place.
Helen has nearly 30 years’ experience including over 18 years leading a variety of preclinical and early clinical development programmes. Before joining Concept Life Sciences she was Project Manager at RedX Pharma where she led a portfolio of small molecule projects from late discovery to early clinical development. Previous roles have also included Director of Project Management and Preclinical Programme Manager at Almac Discovery and Senior Project Manager at Covance Laboratories.
Group Head Of Toxicology
Dr Marc Princivalle
Marc leads the toxicology and safety team with responsibility for driving expansion into areas that aid successful downstream development, such as de-risking pre-clinical candidate selection.
With over 16 years’ toxicology experience Marc’s expertise spans peptides, small molecule and monoclonal antibodies for various indications such as diabetes, oncology, urology, gynaecology, infertility and dermatology. He has cross-industry experience, having worked in senior roles in cosmetics, fragrances, over-the-counter medicines, tobacco products and e-Cigarettes, as well as drug discovery and development. He was previously Toxicology Manager in Product Stewardship for British American Tobacco.
Marc has a PhD in Biochemistry from the Geneva University Hospital in the field of Reproductive Medicine and is a European Registered Toxicologist.
Group Head Of Bioanalysis And DMPK
Dr Graeme Clark
Graeme leads the Bioanalytical and DMPK teams that support investigative toxicology and drug discovery customer programs, as well as standalone regulatory bioanalytical functions.
He has a proven track record of increasing productivity and implementing novel and emerging technologies. His particular expertise is in bioanalysis, metabolism and pharmacokinetics of small molecules, industrial chemicals, mixtures, oligos, peptides and biotherapeutics, as well as ‘in vitro to in vivo’ extrapolation and analytical read-across approaches for REACH.
Graeme has over 19 years’ experience in bioanalytical and biotransformation sciences. He has worked in academia, biotech, large pharma and contract research. He was previously Head of Analytical Sciences at Cyprotex. Prior to that he was Associate Research Fellow at Pfizer.
Graeme is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB), a Chartered Chemist (CChem) and Chartered Scientist (CSci).
Head of Chemistry
Dr David Leese
David joined Concept Life Sciences in 2003.
Since then he has successfully managed numerous teams and projects for global pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies across a wide range of therapeutic areas. He gained his first degree from the University of Bradford and was awarded his PhD in 2003 from the University of Sheffield, working on nucleophillic catalysis under the tutelage of Alan Spivey. David is currently a member of SCI’s Fine Chemicals Group and holds an MBA from the University of Bradford, School of Management. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and has responsibility for all our chemistry activities.
Head of Biology
Dr Chris Doe
Chris joined Concept Life Sciences in 2016 as Head of Biology.
Prior to this he was Head of Safety Pharmacology and Systems Pharmacology groups at Almirall Spain, where he was responsible for the pharmacology support and pre-clinical development of the respiratory and inflammatory drug discovery projects, several of which have transitioned to the clinic.
At GSK Chris spent a number of years working in the cardiovascular and urogenital drug discovery group in Philadelphia and has experience in leading programmes from target validation through to candidate selection. His disease area expertise includes cardiovascular, renal, respiratory, inflammation , CNS and urogenital diseases. He is also an experienced Safety Pharmacologist. Chris obtained his degree in pharmacology and PhD in Cardiovascular Physiology from the University of Leeds, followed by a post-doc with Pfizer in Groton.
Chief Financial Officer
After graduating from Durham University, Mark qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2003. He trained with Grant Thornton, where he rose to the position of Senior Manager with a portfolio of predominantly listed and private-equity backed clients, with turnover ranging from £20 million to £2 billion. More recently, he was Group Financial Controller of an AIM listed business within the environmental sector. Mark is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (FCA).
Head of Marketing
Sarah gained 12 years marketing experience at Peakdale Molecular, now Concept Life Sciences, before taking on the position of Head of Marketing with a company-wide remit. In this role she has been instrumental in rebranding the company in its present form, building the marketing team and shaping the marketing strategy. Sarah has a Masters in Chemistry from the University of Bristol and holds the CIM Professional Certificate in Marketing, CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing and CIM Diploma in Digital Marketing.
Chief People Officer
Sarah has 20 years HR experience gained across a range of industry sectors including banking, law, food manufacturing and testing, inspection & certification. She has held various international roles that have required managing resources in Russia, India, US, Middle East and Europe. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development, she also has a Masters degree in Strategic Human Resources. Sarah brings a wealth of knowledge to the company, particularly in change management, organisation design, talent management, internal communications and how to integrate acquisitions into a wider group. She joined Concept Life Sciences in 2016.
Group IT Director
Richard joined Concept as Group IT Director in 2015. Over the last 20 years, Richard has held IT Leadership roles in the Life Sciences, Betting, Banking and Consulting sectors. With experience of managing multi-national IT teams, Richard has a proven track record for delivering strategic change, operational improvement and strong technical, support, development and project management teams.
Rob joined Concept Life Sciences in 2013. Rob has over 30 years’ experience in chemical and food manufacturing companies including Unilever, ICI and Northern Foods. He has held both UK and international senior finance roles managing global and European teams. Rob has broad functional experience having led finance, supply chain, customer service, procurement and IT departments. He has also led numerous improvement projects such as system implementations, process improvements and has considerable M&A experience. Rob is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
Group Purchasing Manager
Rob leads our Group Purchasing team and is responsible for developing and delivering our purchasing strategy across a complex supply base. He has over 14 years of purchasing experience gained across various industry sectors including banking, manufacturing and environmental services. Whilst at Citibank, Rob moved into a vendor management role in 2003 whereby he gained valuable experience of contract negotiations and managing key supplier relationships. He moved into the life sciences industry in 2011 where his skills were further developed by managing both direct and indirect procurement across a larger spend.
James joined Concept Life Sciences in 2015, moving to his current role as Financial Director in 2016. His previous roles have been with the Ministry of Defence and then with a private equity-backed wholesaler. He has a BA from Durham University, an MBA from Bond University, Australia, and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (ACMA CGMA).
